Systemic way of using instructional media for homeschool teachers.
Let’s talk about how we as teachers supposed to use instructional media when teaching our pupils.
There are certain steps (which we are going to discuss in a minute) which a teacher needs to follow for effective use of these instructional media. But before we list and discuss these instructional media, let’s look at the meaning of instructional media.
Instructional media: instructional media is an instructional material that a teacher uses in teaching his or her students or pupils in explaining the concept, topic, ideas, or message for easy understanding.
These media can be audio media, visual media, or audiovisual media.
Audio media
Audio media is a media in which students or pupils can only hear the sound that is it appeals to the sense of hearing only.
This audio media helps the students or pupils to learn while listening to audio. These media are very useful when teaching Exceptional students (blind) or pupils as well.
Examples of audio media are tape, radio broadcast, compact disc, tape recorder, mobile phone, computer.
Visual media
Visual media is another instructional media which students or pupils learn by seeing but can’t hear the sound, and it appeals to the sense of seeing.
This visual media helps the students or pupils to learn while seeing the pictures. These media are very useful when teaching Exceptional students (deaf) or pupils as well.
Examples are Flashcards, posters, charts, maps
Audio-visual
Audio-visual media is a media that is useful in the teaching and learning process. It helps learners to learn by seeing and listen. These media appeals to the sense of seeing and hearing.
Pupils quickly remember what they learned from audiovisual. Examples include television, slides, video clips, motion video, etc.
If we observed our children when they watched cartoons, they hardly forget.
Now, since we know the meaning of instructional media, let’s look at the Systemic way of using these instructional media.
Systemic way of using instructional media is as follows
1. Analyze learners characteristics
This is the first step for using instructional media. Know your child’s present level of knowledge so that you can decide to start where he/she is, to where you as a teacher want him) her to be.
2. Stated aim:
Before the selection of Educational media, you as a teacher need to consider the stated objectives of the lesson so that the media will serve its purpose. Remember, you are to use instructional media in the lesson for easy understanding.
3. Select, modify or design media.
This is the third step in the systematic use of Media after identification of learners characteristics, identification of stated objectives of the lesson. The next thing to do is to select the media, in case if the materials are unavailable, the teacher can modify the materials they have, for example, a teacher can use an old calendar to teach counting numbers from 1-30.
When it becomes necessary for a teacher to design new materials with no other option, at this point a teacher should use his ability and creativity to design new materials. But she or she should make sure the materials he is to design should not be expensive. The teacher also has to consider the stated objectives, characteristics of the learner, technical expertise to design and produce the materials, time, and facilities required to produce materials.
4. Utilizes the materials.
This is a fourth way of using instructional media for Homeschool teachers. The teacher is expected to plan how to use these instructional media because instructional media cannot be used blindly, the Homeschool teachers need to prepare fully so they don’t fumble during the presentation of the lesson.
The following are the utilization procedure, which a teacher needs to follow.
a) The Homeschool teacher needs to go through the materials to make sure the materials meet the needs.
b) The teacher needs to practice the materials before a real presentation, this will help the teacher to know where to highlight during the lesson.
c) The Homeschool teacher needs to prepare the environment where he or she will use the materials eg lesson room.
d) The Homeschool teacher needs to introduce the materials to the learners and tell them what they are expected to learn during the lesson.
e) The Homeschool teacher needs to capture the attention of the learners during the lesson.
5. Requires learners response
This is most important in the teaching and learning process. The learners are required to participate in the lesson example by answering questions or taking notes.
6. Evaluation
It is necessary for Homeschool teachers to evaluate the lesson to see if the use of media lesson method is effective.
